Margaret Steeden

Margaret Steeden        Textile Artist

A belief that art is an expression of one’s innermost feelings and thoughts leads Margaret to chose to use mainly textiles and mixed media as the means to express herself due to their tactile nature, which in turn allows her to fully explore texture, shape and form.

The relationship between colour combinations has a central part in her work and the utilisation of nature’s own palette can be seen throughout most of her work. The development of abstract concepts and interpretations of natural stimuli is almost always at the forefront of her work.  She enjoys creating new surfaces on which to work utilising a range of techniques. Margaret also finds painting on silk rewarding as the vibrant colours lend themselves to the depiction of natures flora and fauna.

I am an active member of ‘Textile 21’, ‘Silk-n-Threads’ and ‘The Society of Marple Artists’ with whom I exhibit regularly both locally and throughout the North West.

David Steeden

David enjoys painting from life where possible and can be inspired by things as diverse as rusty old steam engines or farm yard animals. David is a great believer in contrast in a picture and the way differing light can change or enhance a subject.

His love of portraiture allows him to explore the shape and form of the human face whilst creating mood and imagery.  David’s true test of a good portrait is when it talks back to him.

David’s preferred media are oils, pastels and currently charcoal and acrylics. He has many styles from the more formal oil paintings of steam trains and aircraft to the looser works that depict nature in all its forms.

David has a love of painting ‘en plein air’  and his expertise has been rewarded by winning several locally held ‘Pro Locos’ in Derbyshire over recent years. He is an active member of the ‘Society of Marple Artists’ and the ‘Manchester Aviation Art Society’ with whom he regularly exhibits. He has exhibited in many local art galleries and exhibitions and his works hang in private collections around the world.

MEDIA                         OILS, PASTELS, CHARCOAL & ACRYLIC

BIOGRAPHY

I am a 3D Textile Artist specialising in making handmade felt. I am a member of Chelford Embroiderers’ Guild, Threadmill Exhibiting Group and am the leader of the Chelford Young Embroiderers’ Group.

I have had a life long interest in art, craft and textiles and on retirement as a teacher of PE and children with special needs I decided to take my City and Guilds in Creative Embroidery. This changed my life completely and since then I have developed my art of creating figures in needle felt and been exhibiting them widely in the N.W.

STYLE

Most of my work is a light hearted depiction of the appearance and idiosyncratic behaviour of mature people in groups or single figures. Other pieces are fanciful birds colourful and fun.

METHOD

I use hand dyed fleece and dyed fleece which is needled felted on to a wire armature and then embellished using wet and nuno felted fleece and other stitchery and embellishments

PRICE RANGE

£15 to £300

BLOG

I have an interest in all art and craft and especially textiles and as a member of Threadmill have exhibited widely in the NW of England.

I discovered the art of needle felting in 2000 when it was in its infancy and have developed my own style since then. Mostly the method is used in a 2D form for pictures but as a 3D artist I developed it to create figures. Initially these were totally felt but experience has taught me that by using a wire armature I can achieve a greater sense of movement and detail.

I like to keep my work light hearted and to create a smile so I often depict idiosyncratic characters of mature years.

Last year I was involved with Exhibitions at the Waterside Gallery in Sale, the Art Centre in Bollington, the Pilkington Gallery in St Helens and at present my work is at the Museum and Art Gallery in Nantwich. Next year I am involved with an Exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery at Buxton in September.

Steven Bewsher

Brief description of work:  High quality landscapes.  Strong use of light and shade.

Style: Landscape; occasional equestrian and figurative.

Medium: Oil, acrylic, pastel

Price range: £259 – £2000

I am a full time artist now living and working in Macclesfield.  Began painting in oils aged fifteen with an early interest in 17th century Dutch painting, in particular the landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael and Vermeer’s domestic scenes.

I seem to have always spent more time out of doors, seeking out the rural landscape or to be more specific, ‘chasing the sun’ until it goes down.  A certain amount of absorption and dialogue with nature was growing all the time.

After completing a Fine Art Degree I returned to the Cheshire landscape and began painting on the spot using soft pastel.  These would be landscapes of farms, big skies, rivers, woodland etc.

These were shown at Colin Jellicoe Gallery, Manchester from which followed magazine articles and interest from other galleries.  Interest also came from Art Societies to give painting demonstrations and workshops which continues to this day.

After six years of using pastels I moved over to using oils and acrylics for the bulk of my work finding this gave stronger tonal ranges and more opportunity to ‘push’ the painting further.

2009 saw two shows at the Paragon Gallery, Macclesfield.  Six weeks teaching acrylics at Bollington Art Group; demonstrations at Marple, Sandbach and Goosetrey.  Two shows at Francis Iles Gallery, Rochester and the judging of the Buxton  and High Peak Art Show.

2010 – another show at Paragon in March, then down to Rochester for a Featured Artist Show where the artist is listed as a ‘Classic Master’ showing alongside Billy Childish and the late Rowland Hilder.

Demonstrations are booked for Buxton and High Peak, Sandbach and Macclesfield before the East Cheshire Hospice Art Fair in October.

I was born in La Guarira, Venezuela in 1955.  I came to the UK in 2006 where I have settled in Leek with my family.

I started painting after moving to Caracas in 1989.  My painting methodology is based on training received from my two mentors, Antonio Galeandro and Siomara Ochoa, who are well known artists in my country.

In 1995 I gave up my job as a hotel personnel manager and established my own art studio in San Antonio, a small town outside of Caracus.  I have displayed my works at various exhibitions in Venezuela, USA and in the UK.  At the moment I work from my Leek studio taking commissions and giving art classes.  I enjoy teaching and my aim as a teacher has always been to help other artists to achieve their goals and provide a comfortable environment where they can advance their individual creative skills.

My strength is in portraits, although my paintings include landscapes and flowers.  I believe there are no limits to learning and I am constantly experimenting and trying out new techniques using charcoal, pastels, oils and crayon.  Pastel being my favourite due to its versatility and that it allows me to finish a picture in just one session.

Style:  Impressionist

Medium: charcoal, pastels, oils and crayon.

Price range: £50 – £150
